Thieves target respected cyclist; Three bikes are stolen

Byline: SARA NICHOL

Donahoo had seen examples of Ettinger's work and wanted him to redesign his new home. After hammering out the basic floor plan and turning over his must-have details, Donahoo placed his trust in Ettinger and let him "...run with the design. I said I didn't want to have a high-maintenance home. I never wanted to feel overwhelmed with maintaining a large home. I wanted it to be functional for my life. That's why, for the most part, we kept the home small."The thieves struck while the 64-year-old was away on a mountainbiking holiday and his wife was home alone."Between 10.30pm on Tuesday, June 28, and 8am on Wednesday, June 29, someone has got into a garage on a house in the Jesmond area and made-off with three mountain bikes. Some problems that can arise can be easily remedied with garage door repair. If the door is not moving well on its track, sometimes the fix can be simple. Though it is often best to call a professional service to address these repairs, working to diagnose the problem can save time and money for the homeowner. Looking to make sure the brackets that mount the track to the wall are not loose, and checking for dents in the track is a good place to start. Cleaning the tracks to remove dust and grease can also help the door run more smoothly. Loose bracket bolts can be tightened, and small dents can be fixed with a rubber mallet, but severely damaged tracks will require a garage door replacement service to replace the tracks. The paper trail was important because it created a home Donahoo says he loves every day, even after living in the home for awhile. "I still notice new details, even today. And I love it. It feels perfect."Donahoo can thank Ben Cervantes of Allen Associates in Santa Barbara, Calif., for bringing Gonzalez onto the project. Allen Associates was the building contractor on this job. Cervantes says one of Gonzales' goals was for the wood grain on the garage door panels to line up perfectly. "To laminate that quarter-inch on the garage panels, [Gonzales] set up work horses and painstakingly aligned the plywood so every grain matched up. All the time he spent on it was worth it; the door is stunning."The cyclist had had one of the bikes for a year and the other for three years."I had a good time away but it made me feel a bit flat as I'm pretty sure it was planned, which makes me really cross."She awoke on Wednesday morning to find overnight the crooks had tried unsuccessfully to force the backdoor of the garage until givingup and smashing down the front. The bikes were worth a total of around pounds 10,000."Brett [Ettinger, the designer] wanted the grains to match as much as possible, but saying it and doing it are different things, and doing it is tricky. I think the results exceeded expectations," Cervantes adds. Ettinger is a partner in Ferguson-Ettinger Architects in Santa Barbara. He said: "I was away on holiday and my poor wife awoke to find the garage doors had been literally dragged off.Northumbria Police are now appealing for witnesses. It speaks volumes when a home's roof is raised a few feet and the remodeling contractor describes the process as "easy." What it says is, the real challenges were in the details. Such is the case with this whole-home remodel in Montecito, Calif., which is all about zero-tolerances and clean lines.Though in the past many owners of older homes have felt it necessary to endlessly use garage door repair as their only option, the modern market with its wide range of door sizes, styles, and materials makes garage door replacement more feasible. Now, doors are manufactured and can be custom made to match almost any past architectural style, giving homeowners the ability to replace their existing door with one that will perform better, more safely, and in a more energy efficient manner than some of the past options. Garage door replacement can be considered a viable option for many owners of older homes to stop the cycle of repairs.NICKED One of the bikes stolen from a home in JesmondMOUNTAIN bikes worth thousands of pounds have been stolen from a highly-respected Tyneside cyclist.Another object of detail was the front entry door. Cervantes explains: "The front door was so heavy. Before trying to install the hardware, [Gonzales] mocked up a smaller door with a jamb and set the hardware to test it to make sure everything would work perfectly. Once it was mocked up he showed the homeowner and the architect how much clearance around it there'd be, and they approved it. We had to put that door up and take it down many times to make sure we set it perfectly. Now, that door is perfect. It ended up being more of a challenge than the garage door.
