LONGWOOD .There are lots of things the average homeowner can do to keep the air conditioning units functioning well. Purchase extra filters and store them in a safe place for future use. The prices may increase from year to year, so buying extra filters will save money long term. Look for sales during off season or just before the warm weather starts.Beware of circuit board burnout. This can be costly. Rolling blackouts can mysteriously cause the damage. If your system is older than you are, consider replacing it if possible. If you are a new resident, ask the previous owner how old the system is and if there are any functional concerns.Check your freon levels or call a specialist to check for you before the warm season starts. Low or no freon can cause your system to burn out, much like your vehicle's air conditioner. Another simple thing is to replace the thermostat battery annually. Fuses and sensors may become faulty, so have them checked as well.* On the first Sunday morning after Ascension Thursday, St Mark's Church celebrated with a sung Eucharistic service, led by guest celebrant, the Rev Janet Sargent. Before the service, churchwarden David Verlander announced that several notices were printed on the weekly news sheets. He revealed that, during the previous week, thieves had climbed the church roof to steal some lead, and caused other damage. Janet read two sets of marriage banns for Andrew Mark Pogson and Kathryn Marcia Baines, also Arthur Whitfield Preston and Pauline Joyce Brook, both for the first time of asking. The organist was Philip Turner. The first hymn followed opening prayers and then Bible readings from Acts and Peter, were read by Dorothy Heads and Olive Houghton. Janet read The Gospel then went to the pulpit to deliver her sermon which was about the previous Sunday. When off-duty, she went to Lindley church as a member of the congregation. She was met on arrival only to be told that there was no vicar to lead the service, so could she do so, at very short notice and no time to prepare. Janet explained that we should always be prepared for our plans to be disrupted with last-minute changes, particularly when dealing with God's work. Following The Creed, intercession prayers were presented by Liz Malafronte, by which time the Sunday school, with their leaders Joan Morton, Kay Rathod and Charles Ross joined the service in time to share The Peace. The offertory hymn, The Head That Once Was Crowned With Thorns, was followed with Communion during which Janet was assisted by server Chris Jones. The service was brought to a conclusion with the hymn Crown Him With Many crowns and Janet gave the final blessing and dismissal.6. * The service on Sunday, May 29 at the United Church Marsden, was a joint service with the Slaithwaite and Linthwaite Methodist Churches joining with Marsden. It was very well attended by all churches with extra seats having to be brought in. The service was led by David Harris, whose family talk was centred around a much loved pet named Molly. David demonstrated how Molly was able to take thing as they were, such as demonstrating unconditional love, the ability to act straight away to sort things that may cause irritation and not be afraid to rest when you need it. The sermon talked of the journey of life and how we need to look forward - we don't forget the past, but may need to leave it behind in order for the future to be achieved. The readings were Psalm 66 v 8-20 and was read in unison by the congregation. Peter Hirst read from Philippians 3 v 7-14. The organist was Linda Nuttall of Linthwaite Methodist Church. In view of the great numbers in the congregation, refreshments were served by many members of the Marsden congregation. Many said that they had enjoyed the joint service and they were a great opportunity to meet with other members of the Colne Valley group of churches.
