The Elephant in the Living Room

The Elephant in the

NIGHTFLY ENTERTAINMENTHying Room95 minutes

Don't be misled: The only animals you'll see in a living room in this doc are a cougar and a Burmese python. (The runaway-slitheraway?--Gabon viper is nabbed in a garage.) Director Michael Webber's fastmoving, bittersweet film reveals a world of dangerous and entirely unregulated pets (lions, tigers, bears) raised behind closed doors. Much of the action takes place in suburban Ohio, a state that rivals parts of Florida for nuisance alligators. Hidden cameras rolling, we attend a reptile show where dads cart off snakes that could devour their offspring. But the real drama lies in the interplay between a passionate cop who moonlights as an exotic-animal rescuer and a sympathetic sadsack who can't bear to part with his full-grown African lions. The cat owner's tear-jerking travails drive home the filmmaker's point better than any finger-wagging activist ever could.--Michael Mechanic

Is It Time To Replace Your Battered Garage Door?

Garage doors can take a lot of abuse from daily use as well as accidents that happen during playtime. Minor damage may occur from the frequent opening and closing of the doors in order to shelter your vehicles. Other damage can include weather damage such as heavy rain, hail and snow. Over time this can cause the door of your garage to become quite battered and eventually require it to be replaced.

Replacing a garage door may also help with heating costs as the seals around new doors may be more sturdy and fit better. Dents and damage can allow cold air or rain inside the garage, which can lead to increased heating costs or water damage. Replacement garage doors come in a variety of styles from rapid roll to full size and sectional doors in various finishes. Windowed garage doors can also add a nice touch to the exterior and lots more light inside.A new garage door can add new life to a home's appearance and increase its resale value. A battered door may still function but the appearance will certainly not make it attractive to prospective buyers. Replacing it with a newer garage door can brighten a home in many ways such as doors that have more windows, allowing more light to enter. New doors may also include state-of-the-art openers and a new entry system that can make a garage opener easier and more secure. When a garage door becomes very beat up in appearance, or requires more and more repairs in order to stay functional, it may be time to consider replacement. Replacing a garage door is best handled by a professional, who will ensure that the new door and its hardware are fully functional and properly installed. If you have children who count on the convenience of the door as they exit and enter each day, you'll want to be absolutely sure the door is working perfectly.Children often use garage doors as a target when practicing sports such as hockey, football or tennis. This can lead to a garage door becoming quite dented and unattractive. The impact from hockey pucks, basketballs or other types of sports equipment frequently hitting the door of your garage can create further damage beyond cosmetic dents. It can lead to the tracks, hinges and cables becoming worn or damaged. This may also occur from very constant opening and closing of the garage door.

Police target 'Hanoi-style' house raids; Crimewatch TURNING the spotlight on crime in the Huddersfield district. The column is compiled with the co-operation of Neighbourhood Watch Liaison:

[bar] CAR KEY BURGLARIES - Raids where car keys are taken during a house burglary to steal expensive cars parked in the drive - known as 'Hanoi-style' break-ins - are increasing across the country. West Yorkshire Police have now issued the following advice: If you have a garage, park your car in it. Many people with garages use them for storage. Clear them out and use them for the purpose for which they were built. This will keep your cars out of the sight of preying eyes. Consider fitting an electric garage door. This is an added incentive to use the garage. Many people just cannot be bothered getting out of their cars, and unlocking the garage, especially in bad weather. If you have to park your car in the driveway consider fitting substantial gates or security posts.

New cars have very sophisticated locks, immobilisers and other security devices and the only way to start the vehicle is to have the key. Thieves are selecting cars they want to steal from outside houses. They will look for any opportunity to steal keys that are left hanging up in the kitchen or hallway or left on the table - and will actually target them. It is therefore vital that householders do hide the keys from view. How To Install A Garage Door Opener

It is difficult to imagine owning a garage door without an automatic opener. Many people, however, start each day with manually unlocking, opening, and relocking their garage doors by hand. Installing a garage door opener is not a difficult process, but you may need a second set of hands for a few of the steps. If you are a veteran DIY type of person, you should be able to handle installing your own garage door opener in just a few hours. Follow these steps, and opening and closing your garage door will be as simple as pushing a button.

Next, take the pulley end of your assembly and attach it to the bracket above the door. Use a ladder to raise the entire assembly to near the tracks of your door. Now take care to open the door and lift your garage door opener so it is 2 inches above the open door. Make sure you use shims here. The next part requires some measuring. Open your garage door to the highest possible point and measure it. Add on about 2 to 3 inches and mark it on your wall. Next, find the center of your door and make another mark on the wall. This is the spot where you want the header bracket to be installed. You may need to use a 2 by 4 if there are no wall studs in place at that point. You want to find the trolley unit and slide it onto the rails. Once the trolley unit is in place, you can go ahead and finish bolting the rails to the opener unit that your kit came with. This next step can be a bit complicated. You want to use a screwdriver and slide it through one of the holes in the rails to hold the trolley in the same place. Begin to attach the belt or the chain to the trolley using the tools that came with your kit. You will want to then wrap the chain or the belt around the pulley and again around the sprocket on the open unit. Youll want to finish this step by attaching the chain to the other side of the trolley unit.Use lag screws to attach the molding bracket to the ceiling of your garage. Attach your garage door opener unit to the bracket. At this point, install the garage door controls and the electric eye censors. Finish by installing the brackets by the door. Before you know it, you will be completely finished and opening and closing your garage door with ease.

How Garage Doors With Openers Work

Garage door openers are undeniably instruments of convenience. With just one click, your heavy garage doors will open, without you having to touch the door.

For garage door installation and repair needs, call A1 Garage Door Services. They provide repair of parts like garage door hinges, garage door rollers, and springs. They provide professional installation of all types of doors and garage door openers. They provide Genie Garage Door Openers, one of the most trusted brands of openers. If youre in the Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, New Port Richey, or Tampa area, they are your garage door repair service vendor.Garage door installation generally comes with the placement of the garage door opener unit. This means your garage door remote control will be programmed so that you will be the only one to open the doors even if your neighbor has the same garage door clicker. Garage door remotes are limited to about 315 Mhz which means that only the set codes, at a set distance, can open and unlock the garage doors. The most complicated part of a garage door is the opener and its hardware the drive mechanism, the garage door springs, the tracks, the brackets all the parts that combine to make it work smoothly over and over and over again. There are all kinds of garage door springs and parts. One of the most important parts is the actual garage door spring. These powerful springs are under very high tension thats what gives them the strength to lift the weight of the door. If you look at a garage door, youll see either a set of springs, one on each side, or a long spring running across the top above the door. The springs on your garage door can either be a pair of extension springs or torsion springs. Without them, your garage door would come crashing down when its closed. Garage door repair for springs will require you to now know the exact size, diameter, and wind (left of right), of the springs in order to properly support the door. Other garage door parts that work with the springs are the rollers and hinges. The typical electric garage door opener consists of a power unit that contains the electric motor. The power unit attaches to a track. A trolley connected to an arm that attaches to the top of the garage door slides back and forth on the track, thus opening and closing the garage door. The trolley is guided along the track by a chain, belt, or screw that turns when the motor is operated. A quick-release mechanism is attached to the trolley to allow the garage door to be disconnected from the opener for manual operation during a power failure or in case of emergency. Limit switches on the power unit control the distance the garage door opens and closes once the motor receives a signal from the remote control or wall push button to operate the door.Garage door rollers enable the doors to smoothly roll up to the ceiling of the garage. Of course, your garage door has to be made of steel, aluminum, or vinyl in order for it to roll up. According to most garage door repair companies, roll-up garage are the easiest to install. Garage door rollers only need to be aligned with the hinges and put in track with the panel in order to work.

How Large Does LeBron James's Garage Door Have to Be?

There is really a lot of talk regarding LeBron James and his career, but what about his garage door? The basketball star has reportedly so numerous vehicles he gives free ones to charity. Current estimates place his particular fleet at about five vehicles. The Ferrari F430 is so small that speculation was far more on how to fit his 6'8" frame inside it. So he will find no issues obtaining that in and out of the regular garage door. The Maybach, Rolls Royce Phantom, and Mercedes-Benz S-class are all fairly regular in size proving that luxury doesn't constantly equal smaller or overly big.

The dilemma could come with the Hummer H2. The regular height for this SUV is just under 80 inches, making James just a fraction of an inch taller. They both would fit under a normal seven foot tall door. Since James and his friends are both brushing upwards of seven feet, it just isn't difficult to imagine that James would want a door 8 feet or even taller. The Kia Borrego that's part of the reward for being an MVP that James and other recipients receive is at least seven inches shorter and would present less of the trouble of clearance. Most of these, though, are donated to the charity of their selection. His grand needs can remind someone of the value of added storage space. Possibly the riding lawn mower is crowded inside the shed. Bear in mind that an additional storage might be utilized to hold additional items other than a vehicle. A well added construction can offer hobby space or storage. The next owner may just have a few additional vehicles to store. If a homeowner finds, between two adults, an exterior number pad and interior remote and then a driving teen, they have reached capacity, he or she must keep in mind they'll find available choices. Contact a garage door service for facts about a higher capacity opener or a method to streamline the remote systems. Someone doesn't have to have a fleet the size of LeBron James to need a far better garage door.

Homes at pub site go-ahead

A DEVELOPER has won the right to build five homes on the site of a former pub.

Planners yesterday gave Clayton West builders P&V Smith permission to erect five homes at the site on the corner of Church Street and School Lane. The sub-committee voted to approve the development. The Denby Dale Conservative added that the applicant would "certainly" win on appeal if councillors refused permission.Ten residents had written to Kirklees protesting against the plan. But Clr Elaine Ward pointed out: "When the pub was in its heyday the car park was heaving and people were parking down Church Street."Kirklees Council's Heavy Woollen Planning Sub-committee approved the proposal for four semi-detached and one detached home at the site, each with their own garden, garage and two parking spaces.Their complaints included that the development would deprive the village of parking spaces. The Emley pub was torn down earlier this year.

The sub-committee voted to approve the development.
